Bal Sewa Kendra: Creating Safe Spaces for the children of women workers

Established in 2025, the Bal Sewa Kendra is designed to provide children with safe, nurturing and stimulating care while enabling women informal workers to participate more confidently in their livelihoods.

The centre was established following a community needs assessment covering around 200 families, which highlighted the need for accessible and reliable childcare. It provides a full and flexible childcare support, allowing mothers to work without the constant burden of arranging childcare.

At the centre, children receive more than supervision. Through play, early learning, nutritious meals, rest and age-appropriate activities, the Kendra supports their physical, social and cognitive development.

A Community-Owned Approach

The Bal Sewa Kendra is supported by the community itself. Women collectively contribute towards the centre, making quality childcare more accessible to working families while encouraging a strong sense of community ownership and participation.

Small Steps. Big Changes.

The impact is already visible. Children have shown improved eating habits and stronger communication skills. Some younger children who were initially not speaking have started communicating within just a few months of attending the centre.

The Kendra is led by an experienced childcare worker who has been associated with SEWA Delhi, bringing long-standing community trust and experience to the initiative.

For SEWA Delhi Trust, childcare is not just about caring for children—it is about creating the conditions for women to work, earn and move towards greater economic independence.
